Repurposed Frame

I've had this huge frame sitting in our garage for a couple of years now....Yes... I said YEARS.

This used to be a framed mirror that was one of the first things I bought when Brandon and I got married for our first apartment. It had a small crack in the mirror at the bottom left corner, so I got it majah cheap.

Well the crack got bigger and bigger and finally the mirror broke all together. It did however, survive a move across the ocean and back before it did...go figure.

You could say it's got some sentimental value. But I had no idea what to do with it. It just hung in the garage while I waited for it to tell me what it wanted...

Speak to me frame, speak to me!...
Black paint with cork...nah
White paint with burlap...no
White paint with sheet metal spray painted with magnetic paint, eh that would require a trip to Home Depot....

Hmmm....

And then I heard it...
Glossy white frame with cork board covered in cute fabric!
That's it!

Is it not just so incredibly adorable?!

Here's how I did it.

-First thing I did was spray painted it with Krylon white gloss...it took about 1 1/2 cans.

-Then I cut out the cardboard backing and covered it with cork board that I bought in a huge roll at Hobby Lobby and cut to fit.

-We adhered the cardboard to the cork with some liquid nail glue to make sure it was good and stuck.
-Then used a staple gun to cover the cork board with our fabric and reattach it to our frame.
-Trim off the extra fabric, then fold over the rest neatly and staple it.
{I just added that part to make myself sound more professional, but whatever I left it like this...no one is ever going to see it!}
- I bought 1 yd of the fabric from Hobby Lobby and still had some leftover

-Last thing we did is use some sand paper to scuff it up a bit more...it was already a bit beat up,
Which I actually loved because it added to the "shabby chic" look I was going for

I'm in love, I'm in love and I don't care who knows it!

This is the first finished (smaller) project in our room re-do.
It will be used as my "inspiration board" for projects and ideas.

Let's take one more look...

{By the way, I've seen these for anywhere from 75-150$ in stores!
I don't think so Tim. I did it for 12$!}

*Edited to add....You can do this with any sort of frame...big or small. Be on the lookout at garage sales, craigslist, or goodwill for a large frame you like. If there's a print you aren't crazy about- pop it out and use the frame. Just remember if you buy just a frame, you need some sort of support for the backing and to attach your cork to. You could use particle board cut to size in this case.

Now, I said I'd show you progress of the room re-do as we go, so here is what the room was a few months ago...

And here it is now....
I decided to keep it real and not disturb the munchkins...
Say hi kids...

Or don't. Whatever.

Everything has been cleared out--either given away or sold.

Next big step...Paint. I already have it and can't wait to see it on the walls!
So ready to say goodbye to that orange.

And now I'm off to pull my children away from their electronic devices and go do something Spring Break-y

Happy Tuesday to all!
