Soar

Soar: to ascend to a level markedly higher than the usual;

Yesterday afternoon, I sat in the grass on a blanket with Mia while I watched Bella and Asher try to fly a kite with Aunt Jacquelin.

I watched Asher running, his face turning red from the heat, determined and confident that he knew what he was doing because he had learned from practice.

He would listen as Jacquelin shouted directions to him..."go this way", "keep running," "now go that way!" ....He would follow her directions intentionally and gently nudge the kite in one direction then the next to keep it in the sky.

He knew what it took now, because he had tried and failed before.

When it was Bella's turn, she tried and tried to get the kite up like her big brother just had. She was certain she could do it on her own. But couldn't.

She was getting tired and impatient. Her little legs ran as fast as they could, her face so determined and when the wind caught the kite and took it up high for a just a minute...she was so proud.

My heart skipped when I saw the smile of excitement on her face, I was so happy for her...and then from one second to the next her smile turned into tears as the kite went crashing to the ground.

I keep thinking of the significance of it all...of how God watches us, guides us, gives us the grace and wisdom we need each day. He nudges us in one direction and then the next, trying to keep us up and in the right direction...where He knows we'll stay steady and strong....just like Asher was doing with his kite.

And I thought about how it must hurt Him to see us trying and trying as hard as we can, but thinking we can do it on our own, like Bella did. He watches and knows we may get off the ground, but only for a moment, because we're not doing it with Him. We aren't listening to His direction, we're headed into a path where the wind...our strength...won't be, and so we come falling down.

God is so good about teaching us, leading us, and redirecting us...He is so gentle about it. He watches us stumble, and He picks us back up. He gives us just what we need, when we need it. He smiles when He sees us learn something new...try something new. He hurts when he sees us fall, but He's there to teach us from it.

Sometimes though, we think we can do it all on our own. We think we don't have to go through it in order to learn. We don't listen to the voice of direction. We're certain that because we saw someone else do it, we can too. But we don't acknowledge the path they followed to get there. The practice. The times they fell too and had to get back up. We think it was easy for them but have no idea what it took to get there.

What I've learned is that God always knows what is ahead of us, He sees what we're going to have to go through to get to where He needs us. He knows what we'll have to learn first, the times we'll fall or stumble...the tears we may have to shed, but he also knows that we will get there. We'll learn to listen, we'll find the direction, and we will soar.

Isaiah 40:29-31
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
