Fall Burlap Rosette Wreath

I made this wreath on a creative, nesting whim last year when I was pregnant with Mia. I loved it and it stayed on my front door all year through. That's how well made this baby is {hehe} it weathered the seasons including a few brutal rain storms and is still holding up great.

I had this available to purchase through the shop for a bit, until I realized I'm not made for sitting still for that amount of time making that many rosettes. That, and I ran out of shows to watch on hulu to keep me company. So they aren't available in the shop anymore. I'm going to show you two different versions. My version is the one filled with rosettes.

Then I made one for my sister with just a cluster of them.

I think both are equally cute.

Here's what you'll need:

Approx 1-2 yards of burlap depending on how many rosettes you want. Better to buy more than you think you'll need. You can always use burlap for future projects.

Glue Gun

Lot's of glue sticks

Fabric of your choice to hang the wreath
{I used white because I liked the way it looked against my steel blue door}

Cut a portion of your burlap into long strips about 4 inches in width.

Grab your glue gun and attach one end of the strip to your wreath and then wrap it around tightly, gluing it down again at the end of the strip.

Keep doing this, while overlapping the strips, until you cover the entire wreath.

Now for the rosettes. There are many many tutorials on how to make fabric rosettes. Basically I just ended up doing what felt right, it's really simple once you get the gist of it.

Cut your burlap in 1.5 inch strips for smaller rosettes and up to 3 inches for larger rosettes.

Fold your strips over and then iron it. This sort of seals it and makes it much easier to create your rosettes. It's very tedious {especially when making a ton of them} but makes a difference in how your rosette turns out.

{I didn't iron this one, it was just a quickie to take pictures for this tutorial}

Then fold one end down a couple times and twist it.

 

Place a dot of hot glue after every other turn or so. 

Keep doing this, rotating folds and turns until you reach the end, leaving a small "tail."

Place a ton of glue on the back and fold the tail to the back.

Then it's as simple as placing them around your wreath by putting a bunch of glue on the bottom and pressing it down onto the wreath. Eyeball it and decide how full you want it to look. I made mine pretty full.

Leave about a 3 inch space at the top for your fabric to hang. I used some extra white cotton fabric I had. I cut it according to how long I wanted it to hang then looped it around the wreath and tied a knot at the top. I was going for a organic frayed edges look so I was ok with it not looking super clean/neat. 

You can see here on this one I made for my sister, I just clustered a bunch of rosettes in one corner. this one is obviously much easier and faster. 

To "fall" up my wreath, I replaced the white fabric sash for some green fabric. I wanted a cleaner look this time so I folded my edges over and hot glued them.{A non-sewers version}

Then I bought 1/4 yard of fabric in 3-4 coordinating fall colors. 

I made my rosettes and then used pins to attach them on top of the other rosettes. That way they are easily removable after the fall and my burlap rosettes are still in place underneath. 

Basically, after you make your burlap wreath, you have so many different options to make it your own or coordinate it to different seasons. For Christmas you could add pine cones and berries, flowers in the spring, sunflowers in the summer. Make it your own and have fun!!

*Sidenote: for the monogram letter, I just bought the C from Hobby Lobby and painted it white, then I used heavy duty 3m double sided tape to fasten it to the door, placing it in the middle of the wreath.
