Ready to Run

I am really inspired by people who commit to something and then finish it.
I think that's why over the years, I have been so inspired by my sister. She has ran in quite a few marathons over the last couple of years. The first one she ran, my younger sister and dad ran with her. They all trained together and finished the race together. My 50 something yr old dad had even injured himself at one point during training but still stuck with it. The day of the marathon, the girls were ahead of him a bit, but slowed down toward the end for him to catch up so they could all cross the line together.



I was going through my pregnancy with Faith at the time, and then the recovery from it. I remember being a little sad cause I wanted so badly to be doing it with them.

Then the year I was about to pop with Mia, I woke up extra early to meet my parents and take the kids to watch Vanessa cross the finish line again. It was super crowded with tons of people. I was determined to watch her finish. I used my big 'ol belly to make people feel bad for me and move out of the way. No shame. We finally found a spot where we'd be able to see her do it. I had the camera so I could take pictures of her as she passed. I will never forget that when she came running past me, I forgot to take the picture because I was crying.


Something about watching her finish. Something about knowing she had trained and committed and finished. I remember thinking she must be feeling so relieved and accomplished at that moment. I was so, so inspired.


And I told myself in that moment that I would run a marathon one day.

I'm at a point now where I'm able to focus a little more on working out and giving time to training.
The marathon is in November. I'm supposed to be comfortable with running a good 3 miles, then begin the real training for running a half {13.1miles} I consider myself pretty athletic when it comes to working out. I love to push myself. Spin has been good to get me back in that focused place of starting something and finishing. It's pretty tough. But running is another story. I've ran before. I used to go on short runs before I had Asher and then after I had him, but after that, everything in life happened. Babies, and pregnancies and losses and emotions and mama duties.

But I'm ready now. So ready. The marathon is at the end of November and I turn 30 in December. I feel like this is the perfect time.

I'm also so nervous. Committing to something means finishing it. And saying I'm going to do something means I'm accountable for those words now. That's tough.
Because inside I'm wondering....
"What if I fail"
"What if I don't do well"
"What if I can't?"
"What if..."

But if I never try and I never even start, how will I ever know. I will always wish and always wonder. I can't live with that. I have to know I at least tried. And in a perfect world, I will finish it and I will pass over that finish line with the same feeling of accomplishment I know my sisters and dad did.

Today is day one of training. Vanessa wrote me out a training schedule and I'm supposed to run a mile today and see where I'm at with it. I haven't ran in a long time. I got on the treadmill last week for a little bit and my body just felt so different as I began to jog. I'm thinking it has something to do with my 5 pregnancies?... Obvi.
But I know in my heart I can do it. If I set my mind to it and just...start. That's the first step right? Starting.




Are you a runner? When do you run? Early morning, or in the evenings? What music do you like to listen to? I want to find a good mix station on pandora to keep me motivated. Have any suggestions?

  1. I love running! I used to HATE running...but once I got off the treadmill and went outside, it was a whole new ball game. I'd love to run before work, but it's dark so I was running after work. I had worked up to 5 miles and was going to do the half marathon but now it's been 3 weeks and I haven't done a thing. And I am sharing a booth at a barn sale the same day of the marathon so I had to pick one or the other. I'll get that half one way or another. i'm determined! It's too hot in the afternoons now to run...where the heck did spring go? But...I do enjoy it a lot! As long as I'm outside!

    And music...sometimes I listen, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I'd just rather hear the birds and the peaceful outside noises.

    Last year I set on a goal to train and run the half. March 1 2011 I started and was doing so good and then summer heat came and I struggled and eventually gave up. Then every excuse in the book took over and finally we picked up a treadmill (Craigslist steal) and I am starting to train again.
    I need a plan though cause right now I just run and it isnt really thought out. LOL
    I am struggling with the best time for me and the right music to keep me motivated so Ill follow this post for some other peeps input as well.
    I would be interested in the run plan your sis suggested :)

  4. Way to go! I would love you to share the plan your sister gives you for training. I have done a duathlon, because I love to run (when I am good about training haha), but that bike break in the middle sure helps to get my legs some "rest" to finish it out. If you like spinning I suggest you look into some, borrow a road bike of a friends for a week and see if it is an investment you would want to make. It funny but I was so excited to see you post that you are going to start training for this because you are so inspirational and I have a race in June (longer then the race I did last year) and I have slacked off my training and need that motivation and inspiration to get back at it! and I know if you are training then you will post things about it and it will help me :)

  5. That is amazing! Just reading this inspired me :) Any kind of distance running is my Mt. Everest. I struggle so much with it. I was a distace swimmer in high school and loved it, but it never seemed to translate over to running for some reason. I've been trying though, I'm doing the Couch to 5k program and it's been SO helpful to me.

    Good luck! If I had any running advice, I'd give it you...but clearly I don't :)

  6. That's so neat your father and sisters ran together!

    I ran my first half marathon last spring and boy did all that hard work pay off! Its the most amazing feeling to cross that finish line after running 13.1 miles. Through the blood, sweat and tears...running with a group of awesome ladies was the best motivation i could ask for!

    i have such a love hate relationship with running. Grrr!!! i love the way it makes me feel while doing it and of course the benefits after, but i hate getting out the door.

  8. I'm training for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in July this year, and while it can be really hard for me to push myself to keep going I'm always so glad I did, and that is often a good motivator. Good for you - hope your training and races go well!

  9. Good for you! I'm a bit of a runner, as in I run, but not always consistently or same distances because I mostly use running as my cardio. I used to run 3-5 miles, 4-5 times a week, but I started getting bulkier on bottom and noticed it was harder and harder to stay toned on top, so now it's just my warm up/wake up/ occasional distance for calorie burning.

    I prefer to run in the morning, it wakes me up and motivates me for the rest of the day. I'm typically a 2-2.5 mile runner, unless I'm doing weights that day, in which case my work out is a mile for cardio and then strength training.

    I'm a little weird with my workout music. My current mix on my Ipod is a bunch of old 90's Contemporary Christian (DC Talk, Newsboys, MWS and Amy Grant when they were still "poppy") and a handful of Coldplay songs mixed in. My running is my me time of happiness, and great guitar and piano riffs, and the music I grew up on is what gets me there.

    Awesome post! I love to run, although I only run about 2 miles a few times a week. The biggest thing I think you should remember is that running on the treadmill is COMPLETELY different. I am down to a 9 minute mile on the treadmill and about 12 minutes on the road!! Also, try to focus on how many songs you've been running for and the time goes by quicker! ;)

  11. I'm with you on my body feeling different. I'm slowly adjusting:) I've started running again... just a mile and a half now. Would you send me the training schedule? I'd love to see it!

  12. Your sister looks absolutely amazing for finishing a marathon :) and what a great goal you have set. I have a back problem (spondylolisthesis) that does not allow me to run. I've never been a runner, but, I wish I could. Run for me :) get it girl!

  13. First off congrats on making the decision to do the RnR marathon. Trust me when I say if I can do it so can you...and when you complete it it will be one of the best fillings in the world. In the beginnig I trained well but the last two month before I did nothing life happened and there was never the time anymore so the day of the race I showed up and prayed for the best. Dont get me wrong mile four I was defeated but I pushed through and I finished. Once I crossed the finish line my legs locked and I could not move but I finished and thats what matters I have always assumed I wasnt good enough for anything but I finsihed and I was beyond proud of myself. I think if your health will allow it I think anyone should try it atleast once and trust me you will want to do it again. November 11th will be here before you know it but we all know you can do it and you will love it and soon enough you will be there with your sister and complete many more.
