What I Wore & Celebrating One Year

Happy 4th of July Ya'll!
One year ago, on this day, I officially opened the Splendor Shop.
I really had no clue what I was doing, I just knew I needed to take the first step, and the rest would follow. I have learned so much in this past year about owning and running your own business. I've had to learn how to balance my time between home, kids, husband, running, church, project hope and the shop....who am I kidding, I am still learning how to balance my time between home, kids, husband, running, church, project hope and the shop.

But I feel like I'm kinda starting to get there. A place where I am really aware of what a huge blessing each one of those things are, and that how I view them has a lot to do with how heavy my burden feels. I learned something a while back and it changed how I look at things. Instead of saying "I have" to do this...{whatever it is} say, "I am going" to do this. Try it. There is so much power in your own words that when you change the way you speak about things, like in this situation, then it becomes more of an intentional, "I am going to" instead "I have to"

Whenever I get overwhelmed, or start to get overwhelmed, I remind myself that whatever it is I am doing, is a blessing. Even laundry. Because it's laundry for a family of 5 that I am intensely and madly in love with.

I know this all might sounds a bit strange, but it is honestly how I have learned to do everything that I do in the best way possible. With a good attitude and with intent and focus.

There is a lot to owning your own business and having something reflect you and who you are can be a ton of fun. It has it's challenges for sure. There is down times, and up times, but you just have to remember to stay true to who you are and why you started it in the first place. I think that's key because it is so easy to fall into traps of competing, comparing, copying....But you gotta know, that YOU are creative. YOU are talented. YOU can do something different and new and God has blessed YOU with a gift to share.

I have also learned to guard myself. I used to look at other shops and think they were so much better than mine and I would never be there. Or I would even begin to think I had to do it "that way" in order to succeed. So I learned that I had to stop spending my time looking through other shops. I just simply don't anymore. Because I want to know when I create something new, it came from my own heart, my own place of creativity. That doesn't mean all of my pieces are completely different and unique to any thing else out there, but it means I know where my heart was when I designed it up in my head. Not competing or comparing, but simply sharing from my own creativity and desire to share it.

I realize I have so much further to go with the Splendor shop. On the business side, I have much more to learn. But personally and creatively, I feel like it has already taught me so much about myself. Mostly to be proud and confident in the fact that God has given me a passion and that sharing it, is something I love to do.

So thank you so much to each of you who have made this year such a great one. I know it's just the beginning and I hope to continue to spread hope and love- a bit of splendor- through every thing I do. That is my prayer.

  6. UGH, you have no idea how much your words hit home and have given me hope today! I'm currently going through a crazy urge to be creative [i used to paint and sew a lot and have not in a very long while], but i have such an overwhelming fear of failure that its really hindering me from getting started. This post has given me a little more of the push that i'm looking for, so a big huge THANK YOU to you for that :)
